Deafblindness is the combination of visual and hearing disability. It may include persons both with total blindness and deafness, and persons with some degree of little hearing or vision loss.
It may be both congenital or acquired, and it is expected that between 5 to 10% of the population in the world have this condition according to the Latin American Federation of Deafblindness (FLASC by its Spanish acronym).
This day is celebrated in honor of Hellen Keller who developed one of the first communication methods for persons with this condition, and became the first deafblind person to graduate from university.
